The year 2018 has begun, and in this short time you've surely had the opportunity to make some adjustments to your beloved bike, buy some accessories (or receive them from the Three Wise Men), or even tune up your car's bike rack, thinking about that mountain trip you're going to take as soon as you have time.

When it comes to our passion (cycling), we spare no effort. That's fine, but do we have the same attitude when it comes to our health? Do we take care of our body as well as we do our bike? Do we check our heart with the same care we give to waxing our bike chain?

Many people get used to "getting by" year after year, taking only their feelings into account, unaware that many problems don't show up in the early stages and that proper prevention can be of great help to our health.

We're responsible cyclists here, not only with the environment but also with ourselves, so let's review some aspects you should keep in mind when assessing your physical condition. Yes, yes, today we are going to talk in depth about the SPORTS MEDICAL EXAMINATION .

What tests can be performed during a sports medical examination?

Depending on our goal, we can follow one or more protocols. The complete model includes the following steps:

1.- Interview and information gathering : in this first phase, the doctor gathers the patient's main personal data and reviews his or her medical history (previous operations, chronic injuries, illnesses, etc.).

2.- Taking anthropometric measurements : height, weight, body fat index, etc.

3.- Exploration: It has several phases.

• Taking vital signs : such as blood pressure or heart rate.
• Spirometry : A test that evaluates the condition of the lungs by measuring the air they are able to inhale and exhale. The patient is asked to breathe through their mouth and exhale through a small tube to measure airflow.
• Examination of the locomotor system to assess possible injuries.
• Electrocardiogram : Evaluates heart rhythm and function by recording the heart's electrical activity. This is important for diagnosing potential heart and lung problems early.
• General strength and flexibility tests . This is another opportunity to discover any injuries you may not be aware of or to see how you're handling those that have become chronic.

4.- The stress test: They are usually performed on a treadmill or stationary bike. In this test, we perform progressive increases in the workload, with a maximum duration of between ten and fifteen minutes. It is essential to perform an electrocardiogram before the test, and have a specialist monitor the test during its performance and for at least three to five minutes during recovery. With this test, we will perform a direct gas analysis (measuring the oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide eliminated by our body), allowing an exact determination of maximum oxygen consumption and the precise detection of our aerobic and anaerobic thresholds.

5.- Blood analysis: it is advisable to perform a complete blood count (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets), analyze the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (red blood cells) to detect infections, and perform a biochemical study to determine the concentration of different chemical substances in our body (glucose, creatine, uric acid, cholesterol).

6.- Urine analysis : With this simple test, we can determine if we have an autoimmune, kidney, or systemic disease, such as diabetes or urinary tract infections.

When is a medical check-up recommended and what tests should be included?

In general, doctors recommend having a complete medical check-up once a year , whether we are athletes or not, just to see how our health is, although in reality most people only go to the doctor when we already have a problem. If we're going to start a new sport and it's going to become part of our routine, the need for this medical examination becomes even more pressing, since we need to know if our body is ready for it. If this sporting activity isn't new to us, but we know we're going to be doing it very intensely , training hard, and competing in competitions (whether professional or not), the convenience of going to the doctor and getting a full checkup increases even more.

We strongly recommend that you check on your health at least once a year , see your doctor, and he or she will advise you on which of the tests we mentioned above are most appropriate for you.

January is a perfect month to get this checkup done, because psychologically we're more willing to make improvements in our lives, and because the Christmas holidays mark a significant break in the cycling world, and the season picks up again after the holidays. This pre-season period is an ideal time to do a health checkup.

School of Professional Specialization in Physical Education and Sports Medicine

This center is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid. It has a teaching laboratory where you can undergo all types of tests (medical history, physical examination, resting electrocardiogram, spirometry, kinanthropometry, cardiovascular fitness test, and detailed personalized reports). They also perform specific tests according to your sport (footprint analysis, asthma, musculoskeletal system, nutrition). You must wear sports clothes and if you want you can shower after finishing. Basic fitness checks are performed here in all the medical services of the various facilities, upon request. Checks are also provided for federation cards, diving certificates, and fitness tests for admission to competitive events, among other things.
